WATERMILL RESIDENCY 2017
Alarm is an original music-dance-theater work portraying the security alarm as a socially and politically charged event. Layering contemporary choreography with sound, vocals, and sculpture, Alarm performs ideas of need, limit and transgression in the context of capitalist society, with its crises of inequality. Christofides’ composition is staged with the choreographed vocal ensemble portraying trespasser, bystander, and the alarm—or recalling the mythological sirens who tempt transgression. The work is vignette-based, with short installments being developed over the course of a three-year span that will culminate in a full-length presentation. Initial development took place at The Watermill Center in 2017, and two vignettes have since been presented as works-in-progress by REDCAT in downtown Los Angeles, and public art organization Los Angeles Nomadic Division at Blue Roof Studios in South LA. Alarm has received support from The Watermill Center, New Music USA and CalArts' Alumni Council.
